She wanted to see the earth from space, and decided to become an astronaut. She went to the library with her mom and took out books on space and being an astronaut, she talked about it with anyone who would listen and she dreamed about it. Her teacher thought she shouldn't try to be an astronaut - that she should be a nurse instead.

I bet you can guess how things turned out. Mae Jemison was the first African American female astronaut, and she went to space in 1992. There is a short biography of Mae Jemison in the back of the book. This is a story that reinforces for readers that if they can dream something, they can do it! The illustrations are digital and ink, and they are great, too. This is a picture book for everyone.
ERPLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07640981280611058439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6151020152469423491.post-69785217251692524652024-03-17T03:30:00.001-04:002024-03-17T03:30:00.129-04:00Read This! Everybody
Percy Jackson and the Olympians series
by Rick Riordan

The TV show has renewed interest in this amazing series! Geared towards middle school and teens, we here at the library think it is a great series for EVERYONE!

Percy Jackson, son of a single mom, keeps getting kicked out of schools. This last time, though, his math teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him...it was not his fault, no matter what everyone says. Eventually he finds out that he is the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea, and things get crazy from there. He is a demigod, half human/half god.

It's great, especially if you were a kid who loved Greek mythology. The Disney+ series is really good, but the books are WAY better with many more cool interactions between mythology beings and Percy.

Here are the books in order:

The Lightning Thief
The Sea of Monsters

The Titan's Curse
The Battle of the Labyrinth
The Last Olympian

ERPLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07640981280611058439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6151020152469423491.post-19949799085246694712024-03-16T10:06:00.001-04:002024-03-16T10:06:48.670-04:00Read This! This is also about a cat whose name is Mister Boo.

This is easy to read, but is a little thicker than a typical beginner graphic novel. This book profiles sixteen specific endangered species, with information about many more. Each species has photographs, information about where they live and what they do, why they are so endangered, and a little bit about different scientists who are working to preserve the species are on every two-page spread.

This book is short, but vocabulary-wise, it's geared to fourth grade and up. Younger readers might do best with a grownup partner to help with harder words. There is a map in the back of where in the world each species is from, and a list of 100 endangered species.

Some good news in this book is the profile of the Mauritius Kestrel, a bird that was down in population to only four in the world and now is up to four hundred, thanks to efforts by scientists to save the species! It can be done! This is great for kids interested in animals and/or science.

ERPLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07640981280611058439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6151020152469423491.post-1197612843591612012024-03-05T19:25:00.006-05:002024-03-05T19:25:46.061-05:00Read This! There is a recipe for Molasses Pumpkin Bread at the end, too!

The illustrations are saturated colors, created in Photoshop using layers of hand-painted ink and watercolor textures. We loved seeing so many fruits described by shapes, textures, colors and the way they grow! This is a great books for readers who are interested in gardening, interested in food, or interested in a bit of a treasure hunt.

ERPLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07640981280611058439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6151020152469423491.post-17985775046325849032024-02-18T03:28:00.012-05:002024-02-18T03:28:00.161-05:00Read This! Ford

This is a book that is part memoir, part history of fashion and part sociological study of where culture and fashion intersect. Tanisha Ford was raised in middle America, and so many things about the way her parents dressed, and later the way she dressed, conveyed something to the outside world. Ford deconstructs different very particular items of clothing in each chapter, relating to the reader about her personal experiences and memories with the clothing or fashion choice, and then some information about the history of the item and, at times, it's sociological impact on the world.

This is a great, warm memoir full of the stories of a person who loves fashion and loves her family and community. Specifically, he visits magical foster kids in orphanages set up by the government. And they're not really orphanages, they are containment homes, and Linus is really there to see if children are treated according to the agency's very strict guidelines. Linus is given a special secret assignment to go to an island orphanage with very special (dangerous?) magical children run by a man named Arthur. And when Linus gets there and meets a sprite and a blob and a shapeshifter and the antichrist (along with a few others), he's ready to turn tail. It's just a book of 50 suggestions - some for parents of young kids, some for parents of teens and some for everybody in between. The facts are: you are who you are and you are wired a certain way. But if there are pieces of the way you react and act as a parent that you would like to see change, or you would like to think about, this is a great book to get started. Each suggestion is 2-5 pages. Some things will not apply to you at all and you can skip them. This is a small and short book, and many parents will find something interesting to think about in the pages.

ERPLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07640981280611058439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6151020152469423491.post-32930774254199605912023-12-05T06:30:00.001-05:002023-12-05T06:30:00.135-05:00Make Something!
